The Choir That Sings Only in Empty Churches
Every month, eighteen singers travel to a deconsecrated building and record its echo before it becomes flats, a climbing gym or nothing.
Critic at large
Funmi Adeyemi is the magazine’s critic at large, writing on film, music, and museums, and on the people who keep all three from falling apart. For nine years she programmed the Lantern, a repertory cinema on the Halbridge waterfront, and her essay collection The Dark Between Reels won the Calloway Prize for criticism. She lives in Halbridge, in an apartment with more film cans than chairs, and makes a rule of seeing everything twice: once from the front row, once from the back.
Music
Every month, eighteen singers travel to a deconsecrated building and record its echo before it becomes flats, a climbing gym or nothing.
Film
Forty reels sat in a garage for half a century. An archivist and an editor spent three years deciding how much of the ending was theirs to make.
Museums
Tea towels, pencils and a book about the building. The economics of the last room in the museum are stranger than they look.
Books
A classic gets a new translation every generation. Its newest translator explains what each of her predecessors got right, and why she still started over.
